"Your subconscious mind cannot reason like your conscious mind can."
What the heck does that mean? You are probably wondering that very thing right now. Let me just start off by saying, I am one who really likes to reflect on common phrases or cliches that are very commonly used as we grow up. I like to see just how impactful those sayings on and see how relative they have been to my own personal life. From there, I like to break down a deeper meaning to help clear up any common misconceptions that may have developed. Today, I'd like to talk about out subconscious mind and how powerful it can be.
To really break it down for you, first we need to understand what our subconscious is. As described by Miriam Webster, the subconscious mind is the "concerning the part of the mind of which one is not fully aware but which influences one's actions and feelings.(1)" This means that our subconscious is a part of our mind that holds memories and information that we are not consciously aware of.
Let me give you an example. You make all your decisions within your conscious mind right? On the other hand and without needing to think about it, your heart is kept functioning automatically, and the process of digestion, circulation, and breathing are carried on by your subconscious mind through processes not dependent on your conscious mind. Something that you have done so regularly becomes a part of your subconscious.
But, there are some alternative sides to our subconscious and how it can affect our every day lives. Triggers are a big part in influencing this part of our minds. Our subconscious takes us literally, it doesn't understand when you are joking or being figurative. Here is an example of what I mean:
We all know the power of manifesting and using affirmations right? Well for an affirmation to work, we must BELIEVE in what it is we want to manifest. Meaning, you cannot just go through the motions and expect your affirmations to work.
Let's say you have issues with handling your money and you are hoping to use affirmations and manifesting to change that. You write out a list of affirmations and begin to read them daily. You see the positive words on the paper, but right after you finish saying your affirmations, you immediately think about the money that you don't have in your account at this time. Unfortunately, you have just informed your subconscious that you don't fully believe you are worthy of your manifestations.
What I mean by this is even though you are saying the affirmations, your mind is thinking negatively. Your subconscious listens to the inner thoughts and beliefs, not the words you are saying. Therefore, you are pretty much telling your mind you are not ready to receive your manifestations and will stay stuck in your current place.
By spending time to really invest your faith and beliefs into your affirmations, you are telling the universe you WANT THIS! We have to train our minds to stop creating "controversy" within in order to become available to what we want to receive on the outside. Take the time to really invest into your affirmations. Make them specific to you and ones that bring you positive energy every time. We have to be willing to take control of our subconscious and to do so, we must practice!!
The more we understand, the more we can work on ourselves. The mind is a powerful place and facing your thoughts straight on is the first step in understanding what is holding you back!!
